Today the Federal District of Mexico ceased  to exist, and was replaced by the Federative Entity of Mexico City. Something DC has been trying to do for years with no avail.

We’re a State now! The second most populated, richest, smallest state of Mexico.

Kinja'd!!!

Bad news for lawyers across the city that had to throw out their old lawbooks and buy the new Mexico City civil law books and constitution... good news for literally everyone else.

Bad news for lawyers across the city that had to throw out their old lawbooks and buy the new Mexico City civil law books and constitution... it’s still Mexico.

No matter how bad it is, it’s better than the DC Metro.

Official DC response:

“Ok, but is weed legal there, hmmm?”

Weed is legal

Abortion is legal

Euthanasia is pending a trial

And sex education has to be instructed , by law, in a scientific irreligious way

DC has a non-voting representative.

If it were a state it’d get two senators and keep the one representative.

I feel like Mexico City and D.C. are two really low bars. I have no desire to live in either of those cities.

Which reminds me: what are some of the “up and coming” cities in Mexico? Like, what cities are young professionals moving to?

Pretty much any city in the lowlands (El Bajio) is bound to be an intereting place to live in for the following years. Right now some of the best cities to live in are there: Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro,Leon, etc but those aren’t very large yet, Queretaro is the fastest growing city though.

Aguascalientes has always been the envy of Mexican Cities because it had the highest Human Development Index for a long time. But it’s kind of hard to judge a Mexican City as a city... Aguascalientes has a similar population density to LA, and LA is basically a huge suburb... not a city in the typical sense. We also only have three subway systems in the entire country, even if our top ten cities are all above a  million inhabitants.

It also depends on your career, a software engineering might have a real problem chosing whether to work in Mexico City or in Guadalajara... whereas a Lawyer or a Doctor pretty much have no choice but to work in Mexico City if they want a prosperous career.

Mexico City will change thanks to the new constitution, mostly the boroughs will be allowed to borrow money now, which is both very disturbing and also a big oportunity to improve quality of life and the potential of many areas of the city that are cash strapped. Plus, and I don’t say this just because I live in the capital, these cities rely heavily on us as the financial backbone of the country, and the hub from which most decisions involving their economies are made. States and municipalities across Mexico recoup almost no taxes, most of it is the feds, and as such, we have all the power here.
